Eucalyptus (Gum)

Eucalyptus is a popular Australian native foliage in the floral industry. "Eucalyptus is a shade of green that is richer and more blue in tone than sage. With undertones of silver, grey and blue; as a colour it can feel equal parts serene, rejuvenating and invigorating." (Source from https://www.italianbark.com/), I would say that is the best description of its beautiful colour. As a florist, I have mixed feelings about Eucalyptus foliage. Its green, blue and grey hues are captivating and complement most roses and soft-toned flowers. The natural scent of the leaves is refreshing, unlike the extracted oil from pharmacies which I find unpleasant. Additionally, True Blue Eucalyptus has a full bushy look that makes it ideal for floral table arrangements; it also lasts long after being cut.

However, there are downsides to using this foliage. The leaves can be quite sticky and leave dark marks on your hands and nails. To remove the residue, you can use lanolin or Eucalyptus oil. Despite these challenges, many florists would agree that True Blue Eucalyptus is worth incorporating into their designs due to its unique beauty and versatility.

In addition to combining True Blue Eucalyptus with other flowers, I also enjoy using a small or large bunch of Eucalyptus alone to decorate my home. Placing it in a clear glass container creates a chic, clean and minimal atmosphere in my living space. Another option is to air dry the Eucalyptus and use it as a permanent decoration by hanging the bunch upside down with string in a cool, shaded, dry place that has good air circulation such as an attic or outdoor shed. This method is simple and straightforward. Enjoy!
